3 Things You Can Do to Make Dental Hygiene More Fun for Kids

child brushing their teeth with their parents

As a parent, you’re probably used to doing plenty of things for your child, and dental care is likely one of them. It’s typical for parents to spend the first few years of life brushing their child’s teeth for them, but eventually, the time comes when they have to take care of their own teeth.

This often presents a fairly big challenge. You can lead a horse to water, but making them drink is a whole different story. If you’re interested in getting your kids to take charge of their dental hygiene, here are a few things you can do to make that prospect more appealing to them.

1. Get Them a Toothbrush that Makes Brushing Easy

As with any important task, it’s good to go into the job with the right equipment. In the case of dental hygiene, that means getting your child a toothbrush that will make things engaging.

Typically, electric toothbrushes are a little bit easier for kids to use than manual ones. Studies have shown that they clean much more effectively than the traditional variety, which is perfect for young kids without fine motor skills.

That’s part of why there are so many electric toothbrushes designed specifically for kids. Many of them even can connect to a phone to allow your kids to play games while brushing, making it even more investing for them.

2. Do it Together With Them

Even if it doesn’t always feel this way, there’s nothing that your kids love more than you. While you won’t be brushing their teeth anymore, it’s important that they don’t lose that quality time with you.

You have to brush your teeth just as much as your child does, so why not make it something you do together? You can show them proper ways to brush each day, and make dental hygiene into a bonding experience.

3. Turn it Into a Concert

Kids love to sing and dance, so you could try coming up with a song with your child to make dental hygiene more investing. This has the advantage of making brushing into a bit of a ritual, and much more fun while you’re at it.
