Of course, losing a tooth for any reason is never ideal, but is this procedure really necessary? Because no two smiles are the same, the only way to get a certain answer is to contact your dentist. However, some cases don’t require an extraction and you could be one of them. Keep reading to learn more about why you were recommended a tooth extraction in the first place and how you may be able to get braces without it!

When Are Extractions Necessary?

Some patients have smiles that are too crowded to receive braces. However, extracting a tooth can make room for the crowded teeth to spread out on the gumline during treatment. Additionally, when some teeth are out of place, they can cause alignment issues that may require surgery. But, an extraction has the potential to correct bite problems, making more extensive treatments unnecessary

What to Expect with Braces

Thankfully, you won’t always need an extraction if you have crowded teeth. Instead, your dentist will evaluate your smile and develop a personalized plan for your braces. Orthodontics will typically take between 8 and 18 months, but this will all depend on your alignment. Your dentist will be with you every step of the way, whether it’s traditional braces or clear aligners. That way, any problems can be easily and quickly corrected. Once your treatment is finished, you’ll be given a retainer to maintain your results and ensure that you enjoy your straight smile for years to come.

What to Expect from Extraction

If the tooth is healthy and has fully emerged from the gum line, it can usually be removed with a simple extraction. Your dentist will use a forceps-like tool to gradually work the tooth back and forth until it loosens and eventually dislodges from its foundation. A simple extraction is performed under local anesthesia to ensure you don’t feel anything at all. The recovery is quick since there are no stitches needed.

For a tooth that is broken, damaged, or impacted (partially erupted or trapped beneath the gum line), a surgical extraction will be necessary. Your dentist or specialist will open the gums and remove the tooth in pieces. Recovery following a surgical extraction is longer than a simple one.

Are you ready to get started on the straight smile of your dreams? You may not ever need an extraction! The only way to know is to contact your dentist and find out.

Meet the Dentist

At Capron Park Dental in Attleboro, MA, Dr. William Herr has a passion for treating smiles of all ages.
