What is Fluoride? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be found throughout the\nworld and inside the earth\u2019s crust. It occurs naturally in all water sources,\nincluding our oceans, as well as certain foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1930s, researchers discovered that those who grew up\ndrinking naturally fluoridated water had up to two-thirds fewer cavities than\nthose without fluoridated water. Because of this, many American water supplies\ncontain fluoride. The American Dental Association, American Medical Association\nand World Health Organization all endorse the use of fluoride in water for its\neffects on tooth decay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does it Help Me? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When fluoride comes in contact with teeth, it is absorbed\ninto the enamel. Fluoride replenishes lost calcium and phosphorous necessary to\nkeep your teeth hard. These minerals help strengthen your teeth and prevent\nfurther mineral loss. In children, fluoride becomes incorporated into the\ndevelopment of permanent teeth and makes it difficult for acids to weaken\nteeth. Thus, fluoride helps to both stop current tooth decay and prevent\nfuture damage<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fluoride is also used to treat certain medical conditions.\nIt helps prevent bone loss in those with rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn\u2019s\ndisease. It also treats bones weakened by osteoporosis. Those with oral\nconditions like gum disease, dry mouth, frequent cavities and crowns or braces\ncan benefit from additional fluoride treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am I Getting Enough Fluoride? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your drinking water is already fluoridated, brushing\nregularly with a fluoride toothpaste should be enough to keep your smile\nhealthy. You can find out if your water from a public supply is fluoridated by\ncontacting your local water district. If your water comes from a private well,\nyou can have it analyzed by an independent testing company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your water is not fluoridated and does not contain enough\nnatural fluoride, you should ask your dentist if you should use daily fluoride\ntablets or drops. Fluoride foams, varnishes and gels can be applied directly to\nyour teeth during your biannual dental checkup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People of all ages can benefit from fluoride. Reach out to\nyour dentist to see if you are receiving enough fluoride or if you could\nbenefit from additional doses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
